I will be in the KeyPort WA area next week and am wondering where anyone might recommend visiting for wildlife pictures. Eagles, marine mammals, terrestrial mammals, and any action shooting opportunities is what I am looking for (like many of you). Thanks for your time and happy shooting !

I wrote this whole thing on where to go and it disappeared. Bummer. So here we go again. Try Seabeck Wa for some eagles along the big beef bridge. Its usually good during the fall when the salmon are in the streams, but people seem to get good shots there alot. Heading into Seabeck, the road will come along the water and all along there you can park. If the tide is low, check the beach, or the trees along side the creek on the other side of the road. I am heading by there tomorrow and see if can see any. About ten miles from Keyport. Sequim game farm also, sounds bad, but the eagles that hang out there are 'wild' :) Then might as well play the tourist and feed the animals bread. Elk, bears, everything. About an hour from Keyport, maybe a little more then that. Lots of sea lions on the back of trident subs, but you cant get there and take pictures. :) So maybe drive around Hood Canal and near the Dosewallips river there is, i think its seal rock? campground, if not open, you can hike to the beach, not far, and since the sea lions are hanging out on the subs, they gotta be elsewhere also. If you want water falls, Rockybrook falls off the Dosewallips river road. About the three mile marker, cross the bridge, look left and see a real small power plant, and its about a hundred yard walk up the trail. Drive further up the road and see if the Herd of elk is anywhere around near the fields or the first set of houses near the p;ower lines. If not, check out the dosewallips camp ground, they hang out down there alot. Right on 101. Same with the Hamma Hamma river where it dumps into the canal, they are just north of the north bridge on the west side bedded down alot. Then stop at the Hama hama oyster company and get some and ask the people there if there are any eagles in, if so, ask them if you can walk out on their property on the east side of the bridges, you will see some trees and maybe some eagles in them. I just called my friend in Neah Bay, yep, i do have friends...:) and he said their are lots of eagles from the seiku river on into Neah Bay. About three to four hours from Keyport past Sequim through Port Angeles. He saw one nab a seagull this morning on the way into work, Washburns store, and eat in on a rock on the beach. Next weekend is the Halibut season and he said they will be everywhere once the guts get flowing on the beach. If you like fishing, river fishing, he has a guide service for the fall and winter for steelhead and salmon. Rick Ross cell number 1-360-460-6266 He may even take people out for halibut or whatever in Neah Bay. You can even call him and ask about the eagles. Tell him cliff said to call. (he should remember me, i just called him....:) :) ) Since you are that far, might as well go to La Push, maybe a little over an hour from Neah Bay. Drive through town, and near where the road ends, is a building on your left, they love to hang out in that tree right there. Even ask the locals where to see them. Since you are there, hit the Hoh Rain forest and hike the trails right there and there is usually a herd of elk that hang out there. Probably call the place, and ask them if they are around. There is another camp ground near Sequim, Seal Rock? Lol? where you might find some seals or sea lions. So, that might help some. So, when are you going to be in the area?

wow - great response and commentary. I will fly in on Monday and stay through Saturday but only have Tuesday all day and from noon to dark on Thursday to tour.... Is Woodbe Island worth visiting? A friend of mine works on the navy base.

I dont get up there much to Whidby Island. I may have spelled it wrong also :). The ferry from Port Townsend over to it, you have to make reservations now. Its weird how things work anymore. I dont know what happens if you dont have reservations, wait to see if no one shows up? Thats driving though, if walking, the ferry terminal on the Island in nowhere near town. You may find something in fort worden in Port townsend. Its right on the strait of juan de fuca. Its just a big park with old bunkers and underground stuff form ww2. But its on the water and a light house there. I have never seen eagles or marine life there, just deer. The other park like fort worden, is before you get to port townsend watch for signs and you would go right. Maybe in Chimacum, i know the way, just dont know the road names. Maybe even on bainbridge island on the east side of the island there is a nice park on the water, cant remember the name of it. If anything, go to Poulsbo, and to central market and get some sushi. I think i talked my self into it. :) Tuesday eh? I work graveyard at Bangor, just directly west of keyport a few miles, i had all this week off, i wish i could show you around a little. But we are going to be busy. I get up around one in the afternoon, maybe thursday, i'll take a look around areas around here this weekend and see if i can spot anything for you. I'll let you know before monday. Its just the wrong time of the year for lots of eagles. I do think its suppose to be nice on tuesday, mostly cloudy and 65. Thats nice for around here. :) Thursday---back to normal--showers. Its to bad Neah Bay is near five hours away, that would be your best bet. If you do think about it, call rick and talk to him about the eagles, it may be worth it. :)
