Photographs from My Yard
I think my last photographic trip was over a year ago (except one day at the Sand Dunes) so I haven't had much to post. But I have been shooting around my yard and it's been interesting finding subject matter in a relatively small area. I'd appreciate any critiques you may have.

This first image was from a couple weeks ago when we got a rare amount of snow this winter. This is a deer skull and antlers that we found, one of 3 deer kills we have found around the yard and adjacent field in the last few weeks.

#2 This was early in the morning with a little bit of fog so I went with a high-key look to it in processing.

#3 I liked this one for the transition from the big solid trunk to the finer detail of the limbs and branches in the upper left corner.

#4 Scrub Oak and Boulder. I liked the texture and the similar colors of the lichen on the boulder and tree trunk. This is a two shot blend for DOF.

#6 The scrub oaks started leafing this weekend and I captured this at sunrise this morning.

Very nice! Really like the fog in that second image. Like the pastel color.

Hi Scott - these clarly are not from your Denver yard since I know we have not had any deer kills around here. :) Anyway, I really love the third image, followed closely by the second image. The patterns and tones in the third image give it an excellent graphic quality. Beautiful work!

That 1st shot is wonderful, it really tells a story, and the snow makes it very pleasing to view. I also love the foggy look in the 2nd one, but then I'm a sucker for the moody effects that fog brings to a scene.

Thoreauvian! Each one is really well-composed - the deer antlers are different than any I've seen and I love your use of form in all of the images.

Its amazing the number of subjects so close to home. Nice work. My favorite is your sunset.

Thanks everyone for your comments so far.

Hi Sarah, yeah this is the Colorado Springs yard, we don't get too much wildlife where we live other than the squirrels and pigeons. (Sarah is my next door neighbor in Denver)

This is an excellent collection all the way around!
I really don't have a clear favorite...I like 'em all for various reasons.
The lichen shot has so much potential, but as it sits here, it's pretty flat. Some creative postprocessing and a nice contrast boost would work wonders here, IMO.

A fantastic collection, but #2 is truly sublime. Beautiful work!

Nice collection of images; two and three are my faves. I like John's suggestion for the lichen (#4).

I'm finding out that backyards have some incredible potential if you try. Great collection here Scott! Maybe we could use the backyard theme in our next monthly theme, hint, hint mods

Oh, to have a backyard like this! This is a really nice collection, Scott. I find that I'm liking all the odd numbered ones best. As is, #3 is my favorite since I have a real affinity for trees in snow. I think it's hard to pull off cloud only images, but you did it with #5. The comp, light, and color are wonderful although I think slightly burning down the brightest spots in the LLC would help. #1 is the most unique though. What a find! I like it as is, but I can also picture this one with some creative dodging, burning, and vignetting to really make the antlers stand out. Nice work all around.
