Lunchtime at the top of the food chain
I just returned from 9 days in Yellowstone and I'm pleased with the images I brought back. I staked out a dead bison for parts of two days and was lucky enough to be there when a grizzly arrived to feed on it.
Here's the sequence of the grizzly approaching, sniffing and finally feeding on the bison carcass. A first for me.

Feeding. Rangers let the bear eat the then scared it off so they could move the carcass far away where photographers like me couldn't find it.

Oh, to see something like this! Great work, Randall.

You were fortunate the rangers didn't find it before the grizzly did and that you also found it before the rangers did. You got some classic shots of grizzly behavior, way to be persistent. How close to the road was this?

Thanks for your kind comments. To answer Don's question, the carcass was about 80-100 yards from the road -- too close for the rangers. Glad they let it eat — and me make photos — before breaking up the party. Never thought I'd see something like this.

Incredible! Those shots really give a great sense of just how massive those two animals are.

I am very jealous of this find...only 80-100 yards from the road?? WOW!! Great sequence Randall. Really like this set.
