I had the chance to take in the Adam Schallau show here in Fort Worth at the local community arts center and I wanted to give everyone the full experience as well as a bit of a review.
First for those not too familiar with Cowtown, let me set the local scene. Fort Worth is cowboys and culture-a laid back town with an interesting mix of cowboys and art. We have the rodeo, our stock exchange trades in cattle and also we host the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. So we have a mix of the old west and art.
The cultural district has the Will Rogers complex which is home to the rodeo. The Cowgirl Museum/Hall of fame is here. The Kimbell art museum was designed by Louis Kahn and is considered one of the finest small art museums in the country. The Modern Art Museum is a new facility where the building outshines the art. The Amon Carter museum of western and American art which is full of Remingtons, Russells, and has Eliot Porters entire catalog of work. The Fort Worth Community Arts Center is the neighbor to the Amon Carter and is the building that used to house the Modern Art Museum before it built a new facility.
So Adam’s show is in a great location surrounded by other museums and art.
Walking into the gallery spaces the first one you see is Adam’s show-The Grand Canyon Through the Lens of Adam Schallau. There is a small stand with show info and you can see some of his prints beckoning beyond. Adam did all his prints large with what I believe were all 24x36 or 30x40 images that were nicely matted and framed.
He had fifteen images in the show. Every print was outstanding- he knows how to print and how to print large. The colors and details of the images were fantastic. The compositions and locations were outstanding too. He had images from both the north and south rims as well as from Toroweap. The light he found was that sweet light all photographers want. I do not know how many trips he took to the Grand Canyon to make all these images but they sure paid off with a great selection of images for the show.
My personal favorite images from the show:
Sunset Toroweap
Hopi Rainbows
Morning on the North Rim
A great show and I was glad I was able to make it.
The only downsides were I did not get a chance to meet Adam when I was there. The other is that there is a group of painters who also had a Grand Canyon show and I wish Adam’s show had been in an adjoining gallery rather than two gallery rooms away.
I have not had time to check out the Library show but if I do I’ll give a report on that one too.
In summary-way to go Adam!

A a couple of images. The one on the left is of some sweet light at Point Imperial.
Darren,
Thanks for taking the time to review the exhibit and share your thoughts. Did you have an opportunity to see the work at the Central Library?
Regarding the amount of time I've spent at the canyon, here is a breakdown:
May 2008 - 1 week, South Rim
March 2009 - 3 weeks as Artist-in-Residence on the South Rim*
August 2009 - 5 days, North Rim
March 2010 - 5 days, South Rim
July 2010 - 5 days, South Rim...part of this time was spent working with the Udall Foundation's Parks in Focus program.
November 2010 - 4 days, South Rim
November 2010 - 3 days, Toroweap
A little over 7 weeks total in the past 3 years. I look forward to getting back to the canyon this July and August to work with Parks in Focus again on the South Rim, I then have a private workshop, and then I'll be heading over to the North Rim for a week.
* My three weeks as the Artist-in-Residence also included over 100 miles of hiking. Half of this was below the rim including a backpacking trip to Phantom Ranch and hiking to Ribbon Falls.
