I'm going to make a quick 1 1/2 day trip up to the south rim during a trip to Phoenix in mid-June. Not the best time to go - I usually try to avoid tourist locations during family vacation season - but I haven't been to the canyon in a few years and I'm feeling the pull. With limited time I'll be confined to overlooks and short hikes. I'm looking for suggestions of shooting locations that won't be totally overrun with tourists. I'll head back through Oak Creek Canyon/Sedona so I could use suggestions for there also for spots other than the icons.
I will always suggest taking a few steps away from the major viewpoints. Some of my favorites include Lipan Point, Desert View, Yaki Point, Powell Point, Mohave Point, and Pima Point. Powell, Mohave and Pima are all on the Hermit Road and will require riding the free shuttle bus. Yaki Point is also closed to privately owned vehicles and you will have to ride the free shuttle there as well.
Sunset at Hopi or Yavapai points are good for sunset. You may wish to hike down the Kaibab trail to ooh-aah corner or Cedar Ridge for a sunrise when the temps are cooler in the morning. Lipan Point gives a nice view of the river. Shoshone Pt is a short hike for less crowds.

In Sedona, you might hike up West Fork of Oak Creek if you have a few hours of time. You could catch sunset from near Midgely Bridge and hope for clouds above Mitten Ridge.

Also another vote for Lipan or Navajo Points as good locations that tend to be less crowded.
Have a great trip!
