Still Winter in the San Juans
Since I got back to Ouray at the start of May, it's been snowing most of the time. April was a record-setting month of snowfall in San Juans, and May probably has been too. What's most shocking to me is how there is STILL a full mid-winter snowpack in the mountains. There just haven't been any big meltdowns yet, and the weather has remained cool and cloudy and snowy this whole time.

While the photo opportunities have been numerous, I have mostly been focussed on getting after the powder on my splitboard. But here are a few non-action shots I managed to grab on Thursday and Friday. You can see a lot more snow/ski pics on my blog: http://www.mountainphotographer.com

If a large spring snowpack means a good wildflower season, then this summer should be insane! That is, if the snow ever melts. At this point I don't expect it to ever stop snowing.

Seems unreal with Memorial Day weekend on the near horizon.

Well, I knew you folks got hammered with snow this last week, but I had no idea you had this much.
These are simply exquisite! The selective lighting and composition on #'s 2 & 3 are sublime, and #1 is really effective with the slate grey sky.
You're a lucky man having this as your backyard!

Wow!!! Looks like the summer backpacking season is going to be pushed to the right a bit!

Beautiful work as always, Jack. I love the lighting in #2. I had no idea it was this snowy in the San Juans. Keep us posted on potential wildflower conditions.

Very nice work. #2 is strongest for me. A few nights ago we were discussing summer wild flowers in the San Juans.

Holy Toledo! That is a lot of snow! Cool pics. Can't wait to see the wildflowers that result from all that white stuff.

#2 is sooo nice! I'm happy to see your endless winter continue and the red dirt staying away this year. I'm guessing there's a few folks that aren't thrilled with winter in late May!? BTW, I heard that A-Basin is calling it Mayuary.

Thanks all for your comments! Yes, it's definitely a banner spring for snow lovers like me! I just hope that it doesn't all melt at once and flood Ouray!

Yowza! That's a lot of snow for mid-May! The wildflowers could be great if the snow melts in time for them to grow, otherwise the wildflower season may not last longer than a week or two and the next year might suffer because of lack of seeding, but then I'm no agricultural expert to say the least. I just read the Colorado Rockies have 246 percent of normal, but it didn't say which basins and I doubt one could assume all of the bas
#2 by the way is my favorite, I think #3 could use some sky cropped out of it for better balance
