D3 ISO Challenge
How many times have I packed my gear because my ISO was 1600 and I couldn't possibly get any more acceptable shots?

Quoth the Raven "Nevermore"

The following images were shot within 30 minutes of each other. Not really extremely low light but my backyard is in the shade after 3pm every day and these were shot between 6:30 and 7pm.

All images were from the same location. No processing, just resize and convert to JPEGs. All were shot with the D3. Variable ISO to be listed. Fixed aperture of f5.6 -0.3ev. Speed to be given with image. I purposely chose images of the same bird in a similar pose on the same perch for comparison.

They might not win a contest, but when light is low and I just don't want to quit....

That is one amazing camera. Superb noise handling.

D700 has the same sensor and noise performance.
Lighter camera. About 1/2 the price. Waterproofing not as good.
DXO website has all the comparisons for ISO, low light, etc.

Fine camera, but you should see my new D3s.

Yes, there is always a new one. I got my D3 the first month they came out after being on the wait list for 6 months. Maybe the D3 should be my backup camera.

I love my D3 and my D3s does a little better in the noise area on the still photos but the video is not even worth rolling. 720 P, 5 min. of roll time, camera over heats and shuts down, comes out as an AVI that has to be converted? If you shoot some nice1080 P and then happen to capture some decent clips with the Nikon it degrades the entire project to 720? WTF? Most of my work is for a newspaper website so big deal you say but thats like having a pro camera that wont shoot RAW!! At some point soon most people will be viewing web site video in HD. I’m already looking at sites that offer the option. Come on Nikon video is important and if you’re going to do it well you have to use the Canon 5D right now. Five thousand dollars is a lot of money to fork out for a camera body that shoots video at only 720 P and then have a NPS rep say, "well TV stations are all based on 720 P and thats why we did it that way". Hey Nikon Id like to make the decisions myself. I’m waiting to see if Nikon does something different with their video next spring but if they blow it again I’m switching back to Canon.
