This is killing me that one of my favorite places in the world has been burning for days.

I had not heard - was it a controlled burn that got out of hand? I just drove right past there twice today and did not see any smoke....

Lightning strike Friday night they say. 3800 acres I believe(unconfirmed). Thats almost half of it.

They are burning so much of the forest this year so I guess what the heck - more than 120,000 acres up here in the Ozarks alone. It will come back just fine in a year or two, and now they won't have to set it on fire on purpose!

I have seen a bit of lightning there before but it didn't start any fires. http://timferrell.com/storm/allinone.htm

I'm going to try to get out there tomorrow and see where the damage is.

How long ago was the fire on Petit Jean? That damage seemed to linger forever. It did open up some ground for wildflowers.

The one at Petit Jean was several years ago and was a very rare HOT fire that destoryed many mature trees - most of the forest fires in this part of the country are much smaller and cooler (by smaller I mean the size of the flames, not the acres). The forest service has set over 100 fires already this year, and set several of them on the same day that Flatside got started, and they have been up to 7,000 acres in size for a single burn. Normally these will just burn the leaves and small brush and not burn the actual trees, other than some bark at the base. Since there have been no controlled burns inside Flatside for a long time, it will be interesting to see if the fire got really hot or if it just acted like a normal controlled burn. Let us know what you find out...

Normally I can get out there any day I want but this week just hasn't worked out. I really want to know where the burnt areas are. I hear it is supposed to be out soon.
