Notch Peak Spotlight
Thanks to all for your comments on my last post! Taking that trip from New Mexico to Oregon of course meant passing through a lot of really interesting country on the way, and I contrived to break up my driving days at some spots in the Utah West Desert that I'd long wanted to visit. This is Notch Peak, often cited as one of the biggest cliffs in North America, though I understand there's debate as to how one objectively measures such things. But any way you slice it, it's an amazing chunk of rock!

A somewhat wider view. I was trying to find ways to capture the scale of this place, but frankly my mind couldn't really wrap itself around that mountain's scale even while I was standing there.

Really cool perspectives, Jackson - I like the second for the layers of sheer rock and lead-in of the dry creek bed. Very nice light and balance too!

#2 is my favorite as well Jackson. Wonderful shot with depth and perspective. This is quite a chunk of rock regardless of its ranking.

Both photos are lovely but I like the wider view of the second best. Really an impressive mountain.

Like others have said both are great but I prefer #1 because of the slightly darker sky.

I like #2; the perspective is better. Maybe burn in the sky a hair?

Wow! That second one is really nice! The photo definitely portrays a sense of the vertical realm. This peak has long been on my destination wish list, but since it's in the middle of nowhere I never seem to find an opportunity to make it there. This is one of the better/best photos I've seen from there!

I was just reading about Notch Peak recently. This is far better than the images that accompanyed that story.
I too like the wider view of #2, mainly for the lead in that the dry creek provides and the better light overall.
Also agree with burning down the sky just a 'notch' (..sorry. ).
Excellent catch, Jackson!

Good feedback, folks, thanks! I was expecting that the tighter view would be more popular, so I'm glad to know others are liking #2 more. I'll definitely try burning that sky a little more.

@Jack: I'd be interested in carpooling out there some day. There's a lot besides Notch in the area that would be worth shooting, would make a great 4-7 day trip.

Very nice work Jackson, I also prefer the second one. At first I prefered the first one but then I realized the leading lines kept my interest longer in the second. I also think the sky could could use a little punch, maybe even some selective dodging and burning to bring out some contrast in the clouds

That looks impressive! It is still hard to get a full sense of scale but putting something else in the images would have ruined them. For me, the second one is the winner. .

Another vote for #2, but with #1's sky. I know nothing of Notch Peak, but it certainly looks like a great area to explore.

Never heard of Notch Peak before, but after seeing these, it's on my wish list of places to visit. Great pics!

Good stuff, Jackson. I too like the wide view, but I like the light more in the first one.

@Jack, @Jackson,

I live relatively nearby (as such things go, at any rate). I'll probably head out there at least once this summer, probably on my way to or from Great Basin NP. I'll post images and information when I have it. Probably early July.

Cool, Mark. I'm going to try and stop by the Jarbidge Wilderness and maybe Great Basin or Mt Moriah or the High Schells on my way home from Idaho in late July. I'll look forward to seeing what you come back with!

The second one gives me a great sense of the scale of the place with the trees included, but both comps work. I would love to see this place. Nicely done.

Nice shots Jackson! I also vote for #2.
