Jack,
Thanks for posting this. In my pea-brain this melds very well with things I've said on "Hot Topics" in NPN, most of which seems off topic to members.
If you haven't you can look the the post just previous to yours about "Bone to Pick". It's been closed, but you could, if you wish to put up with the flak, add your thoughts on your thread...???
Your post brings to light, at least in my mind, how photographers need to be very AWARE. And not just photographers. Your episode rings of pre-WWII Germany. Won't happen here. It is happening.
We don't live as photographers in a vacuum. Retreat from reality is childish. Principles before play, eh..
Everything is dynamic and your rights will change in the future unless they are guarded by US.
Well, the cops here were obviously idiots--but their idiocy escalated once he refused to show his ID. Personally, I dont see a cop asking to see my ID (especially when im videotaping trains) to be a huge invasion of my privacy. Just show the ID--end of incident. But no outrageous youtube video then...
BTW, just read your closed post Larry--im with you on that, i think anything is game to discuss in a community such as this. But we're obviously in the tiny minority on that one--ah well!
Showing ID reminds me of the old movies with the spy on the train when the "police" are going from car to car saying, "Show me your papers" ...
It will get worse. Homeland Security is the reason we all tend to say, OK. Gradualism is our enemy.
And, as a sidelinght, according to Hayek's, The Road to Serfdom, one of the most difficult tasks is to plan when authority becomes centralized is how people should spend their "leisure time"... There goes photography ? ! ? I'll post the quote later.
