I am currently shooting with a Canon 7D and 5D MkII. I am using Promaster Compact Flash professional High Speed card, Promaster card reader and computer has Windows 7 with Photoshop CS4. All of a sudden, when I try to download using the card reader, the computer sees the reader is plugged in, but it doesn't go to the download window. When I try to just copy the files over, it says the card needs to be formatted. When I plug the camera in, everything is fine and I can download straight through Bridge. When I buy my cards, I format them in the camera. I was told when you want to erase a card, I should also use format and not erase. Is the formatting in the camera incompatible with the format the computer is looking for? What am I doing wrong?
Does it do this with every card? Some newer higher capacity cards are not compatible with older card readers. If you bought the card recently, you may need to upgrade or replace your reader.
I agree with Buck, I have ran into this same issue when I purchased faster cards I could not read them with my card reader. A new card reader solved my problem.
Thanks guys, that's probably the problem. I just put into both cameras 2 new 8G fast cards. I also just bought a card reader that is having the problem. Any suggestions on a card reader?
I use a SanDisk multi-card reader. I also use a Lexar SD card reader that came with an SD card that was too high a capacity for the SanDisk. Each new camera, with its higher resolution sensor requires higher capacity cards, so I have to get a new reader when I get a new camera, which really isn't all that often. And card readers aren't expensive, especially compared to most camera gear.
Edit: If you bought the same brand cards and card reader at the same time from the same store, (Promaster is Ritz's brand, isn't it?) You should return the card reader and get a credit toward one that works.
Be sure and check the pins on the card reader! My card reader for CS has a problem. For some reason ( maybe my daughter!), there is a pin in the reader that wants to bend and contact another pin in the reader. Interestingly, this seems to have NO EFFECT on the upload of the image. I check it out now every time I use it...I can tell that they are together and I use a knife to separate the pins. I may be just TOO lucky that these two pins in the reader are not being used! It always works! I have used this card in my Nikon D700 for over 10,000 images. I can tell on the CS chip that the double pins in the reader have widened the hole in the chip where the two pins have pushed in together. Perhaps you have this same problem but in a place where it DOES make a difference. My two cents, but please understand that inflation may make my 2 cents worth less!
