Reed, this isn't "online" but the PS for Nature Photographers serties of books are excellent. There is one for CS3, 4, 5, etc - you can learn at your own pace, and have the book around permanently to refer to.

http://www.amazon.com/Photoshop-CS5-Nature-Photographers-Workshop/dp/0470607343

These places do offer online courses:

www.kelbytraining.com/
www.adobe.com/support/photoshop/gettingstarted/
www.ascendtraining.com/.../adobe-photoshop-training.php

Check online - there are surely lots more.

Good luck!

Well, there are a billion things you can do in PS5. Here is a tip. Bring your photo into PS5. Go to Images and Adjustments and select VIBRANCE. Slide the adjuster until you see changes such as color and clarity (sharpness). This actually might be a fairly high number (25-60). It will just make your image look better and sharper. It is up to you how much to use. Then use smart sharpen amount 41%, radius 1px and gaussian blur and more accurate. I use this for web images. I think you will find that this will give you very nice images with VERY LITTLE effort for screen images.

Now, if your image is all over the place and this does not work, you might think about taking the image over again! This is a solution for overall image modification and really works well when you take ALOT of images and do not have time to use all the features in PS5 to make tons of adjustments. If you need to make tons of adjustments, then you probably did not get a great image from the get-go! My humble opinion. TRY THIS! I think most of you will find this to be a REALLY NEAT TRICK!

For online courses in any aspect of photography, including Photoshop, I can highly recommend BetterPhoto, www.betterphoto.com. In fact, Kevin Moss teaches a PS course geared specifically for nature photographers, which I've taken.

Reed, They aren't geared toward a particular genre of photography but the Lynda.com Photoshop courses are excellent.

Zac Schnepf and Mark Metternich are two very fine photographers above now offer private Photoshop training via computer, You will need broadband, and Skype. I have not utilized these services yet but plan to do so. If these guys can teach a tenth of the what their images show then there can be no down side to trying this out. :toast:

Hey Reed,

My recommendation is results-based and included a superb experience. If your friend has the wherewithal and commitment, they should really consider the courses at the Santa Fe Workshops. It's a classy outfit with really meaningful week-long classes of all sorts, including beginning Photoshop. The setting is ideal, and it would make a nice centerpiece for a vacation to the Southwest. Even after 20+ years of pro shooting, their classes are very meaningful and first on our list of places to go any time we want to try something new.

I second the Lynda.com recommendation. Great bang for the buck.
