I recently returned from a trip down to check out Big Bend NP. Conditions were not the best with nothing but clear skies, no clouds, extremely dry and HOT!!! My roof thermometer in my tacoma read 113 one afternoon. Anyway I did not get many decent images (actually did not even shoot much because of the conditions) This dawn glow image is one of the few I am happy with.
I will return probably during March or April next year with hopefully better conditions. The landscape and geology is quite spectacular.
Stephen....as a resident of the state I can tell you Big Bend is a place to visit in the early spring...like April. Way too hot, now.
Still, I like the image.....Joe Rogers
In my experience, the third week of March tends to be the best time. The last time I was down there it had snowed the week before, and it was over 100 degrees the following week. It happened to be a "perfect" 85 degrees while I was there.
Great color in the sky. Like the moon in the corner.

Clear sky and hot. Sounds like Big Bend in May. Glad you liked the park despite the conditions.
Big Bend is a park to visit from September to April. Late July-Oct brings rain but after Labor Day seems the best for photography. Winter is usually mild but it can snow. The spring flowers will start in February and cactus finish in late April. by then it is very hot. May and June tend to be the hottest and clearest months.
For spring I would look at weeks 1 or 4 or March if you want to catch flowers. Weeks 2-3 are usually very good but that is also spring break and the park will be full.
I have an article here on NPN about the park those going to Big Bend might find useful

Thanks for the info. It was a bit of a last minute decision to go there as I had to drop my wife off in SW Oklahoma to help my daughter in a move to New Mexico. and since I was relatively close and had never been there I would check it out. I will return in the "Spring"!
