Hi all,

I'm driving up to Telluride, CO today and will be spending a week there taking nature photos and then enjoying the bluegrass festival.

Can you recommend any spots near Telluride for nature photography? I'm looking for sunrise/sunset locations as well as general recommendations. Will there be wildflowers there this time of year? Best spots to find them?

I'll be heading up to Grand Teton after Telluride (thinking of hitting up Dead Horse Point SP and the Wasatch range on the way up). Can't wait to enjoy this beautiful stretch of country! Also let me know if you have recommendations for a spot to camp in Wasatch range.

Thank you so much!

Aaron

Hi Aaron - You will probably be too early for wildflowers, but there are a lot of beautiful places in that area even without wildflowers. Some places to consider (I have no idea if these places are still covered in snow):

-Alta Lakes (hike/drive w/ 4x4)
-Woods Lake area, plus Wilson Mesa and Silver Pick Roads (if you are interested in aspen bole fences, there are some photogenic ones in the Wilson Mesa area). I have not seen many photos of Woods Lake and the surrounding area, but I like the area a lot. There are some hiking options and a lot of options for roadside photography. The roads in the Silver Pick and Wilson Mesa area can seem like endless loops. Be sure to bring a map.
-Lizard Head Pass area (opportunities for shooting from your car or hike).
-Last Dollar Road (mostly car, big vistas, etc, I have been fine on this road with my Outback)
-Blue Lakes (hike). I have not been here, but it is on my list for this summer.

If you are in the Ridgway, CR5, 7, and 9 are always worth exploring.

Have a fun and productive trip!

Sarah hit on many of the highlights, I just wanted to add that now is a good time to visit the many waterfalls in the area like Bear Creek, Cornet, Bridal Veil, Mystic, etc. These are especially good alternatives if you hit the area when the weather is overcast.

Bear Creek Falls is a nice little hike out of the SE corner of town to a pretty waterfall.
