Howling at the Moon
I had driven down to Sedona yesterday evening to catch the fullish moon rising between the spires of Cathedral Rock. (TPE is a blessed tool for determining shooting positions). As the moon was close to appearing a few coyotes began to yap from below. I hoped my dog would not run down to greet them. As the moon rose, I was able to move down and across the slope of the hill to reposition the moon between the spires. All were taken with a new Nikon 70-300 f/4.5 set at f/6.3 ISO 200.

Preferences and suggestions?

#1 @ 138mm

#2 more of centered shot @ 165mm

#3 closer @ 200mm

What a fine place to catch a moonrise, and you did a great job, Doug.
I prefer #2 over #1, and I would prefer #3 over #2 if the composition had been more centered (right side resembling the left more.
When you have symmetry this strong, there's nothing wrong with having the focus in the center.
Unfortunately, there appears to be some strong pollution in the skies (fire smoke?). It's less visible the tighter you zoom in, fortunately.

Very nice moon shot! I prefer #2 and #3. Too bad the sky is so gray. Have you tried tweaking it to get it a little more blue?

A beautiful shot.. I prefer #2 in the series myself. I would agree with Phillip about seeing if you can get a little more blue out of the sky, but make sure you don't overdo it.

John, Phil and Koveh- here is a redux of #3 (started with a more centered image taken a few moments later), the final being more centered and more blue in the sky. Thank you for the input.

Hi Doug - wonderful series. The second one really stands out to me. I like the composition a lot and the light on the rocks is great. I do not mind the hazy sky, but agree that a bit more blue could add something to the image. Great work!

All are sweet...but my favorite is the second one. Nice work Doug!
