West Fork- Take 3
After the first trip two weekends ago, I have made two more hikes up West Fork of Oak Creek. The second trip was with fellow NPNer Shane McDermott. I hoped to arrive earlier in the morning to redo the wall with the monkey flowers and not get the bright reflection in the frame. In the week's passage between trips, some of the blooms had dried or fallen, but still seemed enough for a composition.

#1 redo of monkey wall

While I was reshooting the wall on teh right side, Shane was working this group of flowers on the left. I did not notice while photgraphing, but some stirred silt clouded the water and appeared in the image and hence required me to make a third hike on Tuesday to this pool about 4 miles from the trailhead.

#2 Flower group on left wall. About 2 hours after sunrise, reflected light gave the end of the tunnel a nice glow.

A vertical comp from here is posted in the Landscape/ESS gallery.

#3 Between pools, this group of flowers was growing from a crack in the streambed.

#4 In a shaded section, ferns and greenery lined the bankside wall

#5 The green leaves against the desert varnish on the sandstone wall made for a good color contrast.

As always, any critical eyes and suggestions are welcome.

I think I actually like the flower-less last two the best.

Love the lush ferns in #4, wow!

I think that your best flower image is in the 'Landscape' gallery, Doug.
#'s 1 & 3 may have benefited from sticking that wide angle lens right up close and personal to the flowers?
And I really like the last two! Beautiful colors and a nice contrast with the sandstone.

Hi Doug - I agree that the best flower image is the one you posted in the Landscape gallery. I really like the last two. Both are quite interesting and beautiful. Nice work!

Thank you for the comments. In these three trips a few mistakes were made from which to learn. When the maples turn in late October, the canyon will beckon again.

Very cool stuff Doug. I like the series, but I am partial to the first one. I like the flowers, but also love the half pipe of the mountain curling around.
