I'm thinking it's time to create a Video Forum, for the discussion/sharing of video. I've been dinking around with a Flip camera and have had some fun with it. In fact, I'm seriously thinking of stepping up to a reasonable camcorder to be able to do more.
Garth McElroy and Jim Zipp are doing bird video with their DSLRs and have a site for their work here - Wild Bird Videos. Cool stuff, be sure to check it out!
So how many would be interested in a video forum? Videos would be uploaded to YouTube or some other site and we would link to them.
I'm not a video person Jim, in fact verging on the opposite. I suspect it will be very popular, and off-site posting bypasses lots of issues. I'd say go for it, and I'm not even going to be involved!
Having nothing to do with the topic, but with nowhere else to post my question, I'll do so here:
I think it's a good idea - especially if we can simply imbed videos from youtube which would make things real easy. I've dabbled in video a little and now that I have a tripod plan on doing a lot more. I think it's a great possible avenue for us nature photographers to explore especially when it comes to having marketable "products".
I've been wondering about this, since I've been throwing together short video compilations from my trips ever since I got my 7D. Thumbs up from me!

I'm not into video myself but I'm sure many others are. Another area where videos could be useful is tutorials. Things like Photoshop techniques, for example.
My e-5 has video, but I've never used it. In fact, I forget it is there when in the field. Might motivate me to try.

LOL! Well, Jim, you know you have twenty thumbs-up from ME, I think the NPN members are sick of hearing me talk about it. I'll be happy to contribute... Going from the footage off of a 5D Mark II to You-Tube ready takes a few steps, so I can share all I've learned since Sept 2008 when that camera was announced and I was bit by the HD video bug, lol.
Also, when someone cuts together a finished piece and wants to display it on a site targeted more to the artist, Vimeo.com is a great place. I'm looking into ExposureRoom.com also.

Great idea, Jim. It is a comming field of nature photography and a challenge that is not easy to learn. If your planned site can teach video as well as this group teaches nature photography you will have a huge winner of a venture. Please go for it.
Absolutely nothing at all! I figured since I spend so much time working with a keyboard on NPN, it may as well be my avatar. The little red finger toggle on my IBM Thinkpad made for an interesting focal point (in theory, anyway).
Jim,
I don't think its a good idea. Creating high quality video, at the level of most NPN stills, is very difficult. I would be concerned that the majority would be poor quality clips, without story or impact, without proper editing, without quality sound. I personally don't think its worth your efforts, there are plenty of video venues out there.
First, I agree with Carl that there are plenty of video related sites already, both for those interested in making them and showing them.
Second, NPN already has so many forums and galleries, it's very difficult to keep up with; adding another layer would add to this.
Third, I think if folks have video related questions, these could be posted in the digital imaging forum and a link provided to the video, if there is one.
Finally, If NPN hosted the video files on it's server, this would take a tremendous amount of storage space and bandwidth; space that I believe could be utilized for images or discussion, and their repective comments.
Preston - it's my understanding that the videos would be hosted on Youtube's servers and simply embedded on NPN. And while there may be plenty of video sites - how many are dedicated soley to wildlife videography (with the DSLR being the near exclusive device). I would guess that an NPN forum (note: not a gallery) would be unique on the internet.
I have no interest in video whatsoever. It annoys me to see otherwise acceptable cameras kludged up with it. I wouldn't shoot it and I'd never view the gallery. That said. I think the gallery is a good idea for those interested.

And I second Hanks off top query!

Exposing myself as the complete macophile, I didn't even recognize it, an the red spot had me really scratching my head.
Hope all is well with you & the family. While I am not into taking video, I certainly would like to have the chance to view them.

I could see a timelapse gallery.

Thanks. I missed the part in Jim's post stating that videos would be stored elsewhere, and stand corrected.
I still stand by my other assertions, though.
