I will be coming out there July 8th and I'm having a very hard time deciding where to go. I plan to go down to Silver Falls and Abiqua but other than that it's up in the air. Out of these options what do you think is best right now?

Mt Hood area
Mt Rainier area
Gorge
Cape Kiwanda
Cannon beach
other ideas?

I only have one night, one full day and a morning before I head home. I'm kind of burnt out on waterfalls but the silver falls area looks so cool. Thanks!

Dave,
It really depends on the weather, and in Oregon its certainly too early to predict July 8th! ( as of now its sunny and warm). If that is the case I would certainly head to the coast. There are 2 beaches ( one with easy access) at Ecola State Park (just north of Cannon beach). Sunset a Cannon Beach , though "old hat" for us, can be something to see f you never experienced it. However you have to watch the marine layer in the afternoon ( you can see this using the visible satellite radar on most weather web sites). Cape Kiwanda isn't far and there is a lot to see and photograph in between.

The wildflowers on around Hood are probably a week -3 after the 8th and Rainier is even later(August). The gorge is great , but in contra-sty light (sunny days) the shooting is challenging.

If it were me I'd head to the coast.--just my 0.02 cents.... have a great time and shoot me an email if you want to chat on the phone.
Regards,
Jack

If you head to the beach as Jack suggested check out Oswald State Park between Cannon Beach and Manzanita. Haven't been there in years but I remember there being some awesome tide pools, just a short, easy hike down from Hwy 101.

Thanks guys, I'll head to the coast then! Do you know if the campground at Oswald is open now? Do you think I could find a camp spot at any of these spots on a weekend?

The OSP website still lists the campground as closed, but I haven't been there recently to verify.

If I had only one night to spend, I'd opt for Webb County Park in Pacific City. It's simple, but does have warm showers. The best part is that you can walk from there to the cape to have a chance at both sunrise and sunset. (You also happen to walk past Pelican, if you are so inclined).

This time of year, it can be hit or miss on weekends as far as spots. I've never done it, but according to the above pdf link it does look like Webb takes reservations.
