Snowy Range this morning
Incredible conditions this morning at snowy range, went up with Randy Van Winkle (who's a lurker here) and met another NPN member whose name is escaping me right now (getting up at 2:30 will do that to you)

Very nice catch here David. I shot this from almost the exact same spot one year ago but had a slightly different result. As I was setting up my tripod, the camera somehow came forward and off the tripod mount. You can imagine how I felt when my camera went into 18" of ice cold water....but amazingly after the camera dried out, 2 days later it worked perfectly although the lens didn't fare quite as well.

Anyway, I love how the sunlight catches the side of the mountain and the reflection is spot on!

Now that's what I'd call a glassy lake! Really gorgeous shot, man.

Very nice image. Like the red tone on the mountaintops; and the amazing mirror lake.

Very nice, David,. I applaud you and Randy for climbing down that treacherous snowbank to get this shot.

Great image. Not over saturated. Almost looks like a painting.

Sublime colors. Wonderful image.

Great water conditions for a reflection. The trees in the reflection seem to be "leaning" from distortion more than the real ones above.

Nice. Love the Snowys!

Thanks guys, it's hard to go wrong up there. That is interesting Doug, it is a 5 shot vertical pano at 10mm, I'm surprised it came out as well as it did. I'm not too sure how to fix this now, I may have to start over and fix them individually :frown:

A fine reflection!

It appears the Snowy Range has much less snow this year. I visited just a few days earlier last year. The lake was frozen and the campground road was still blocked with 14ft+ drifts. Are the campgrounds officially open yet?

Great shot, David! I've been away for a while and just not got to see your sweet sunrise capture from Lake Marie. Beautiful pink light on the peaks is common in the Snowies but interesting clouds and mirror reflections are rare. I drove over the Snowy Range today and can attest to the fact that there is MUCH, MUCH more snow present than usual. Snowpack this year was something like 250% of normal. Lake Marie is open water but most of Mirror Lake is frozen. All the best hiking trails at the top of the Snowies are buried under many feet of snow. It will be August before my favorite hikes on the Gap Lakes Trail and Medicine Bow Peak Trail are feasible. I'd estimate that usual photographic/summer conditions have been pushed back at least 3 weeks from normal this year.

Bill, as Brett said there is a lot of snow left up there, none of the side roads are open and only the lower campgrounds are open, although there is an open area where people camp towards the top that is open (hmm maybe this weekend...) this image is decieving as the rest of the lake is still frozen and there's a huge snowbank behind me

Brett, let me know when you go up there, I would like to explore the area more and your images from the area are stunning!
