Taken using the car as a hide.
Post(perch) put in on private site by fellow photographer.
Please note this is not a captive bird in spite of the ring.
There is quite a heavy on going ringing program within North Norfolk and sometimes it seems almost impossible to find one without.
Up and till three weeks ago up to six birds all hunting at once.

Hello Major
I was trying to work out which private site had posted this picture first  !!
Then it dawned on me  , I think I must be going a bit senile.
Anyway, I like the Owl and that B/G is just perfect.
I know the rings are a pain for us photographers, but they are certainly a scientific help for the birds in the long term as a result of the bird's studies.
Best wishes

Major,
These birds always look stunning against a dark background and this is no exception.
Lovely shot. Compositon good, exposure very nice.
I just have a small problem with that primary feather which he/she just doesn't seem to have tucked away fully! (Only a tiny personal nit!)
Good work - would like to have some of the stats!

Cheers,
Roy

Hi Major
a beautiful picture of the Barn owl. What time of day was it taken? as I am having a problem seeing the Barn owls that I have located in my area.

Love it Major. Nicely composed and really good detail showing. What has been done to achieve this BG?

Many thanks for all your comments.
Roy here are the stats as taken.
D2X + 600mm AFS II. Taken on a bean bag from the car.
Ex Mode Manual. 1/320 f5.6. Ex comp -0.7
ISO 100. Colour Mode II rgb. Tone comp Auto. Hue adj 0.
Sat Normal. Sharpening None.

John this bird was taken at 4pm. 06/03/06.
Rene dont know what area you are from but around here I could take you to numerous sites. None are guaranteed of course, but take this morning I had a Barn Owl flying on a disused airfield at about 10am. It was quite windy and the bird was struggling to hunt, but pretty bright. I didn't expect to see it.
Chances are if its been raining heavy or blowing a gail the night before and the next morning its calm you will get Owls in the daylight. They need to feed.
If you find an area where they frequent ,stick some perches in and sprinkle grain around the base to attract rodents. Mr Barn owl will appreciate the perch perticularly if its a stretch of set a side with no where to rest. Norfolk certainly has a very high density of Barn Owls so I am lucky.
Graeme the Bg is in actual fact a belt of dark green coniferous woodland and with a combination of the F stop and failling light makes the BG go nearly black.
Hope that answers all the questions.

Major.
