Hi, has anyone ever bought a refurbished camera, have a chance to buy a refurbished canon 5dmk2 body only for $1999.00, has a 3 month warranty. I'm not sure if I should buy it or not, refurbished kind of worries me. Any advise is appreciated. Thanks.
I can't speak for cameras but I've bought and know many people who have bought refurbished goods from Apple and they have always been rock-solid. Refurbs are usally a great way to save a little money. But, are you buying this refurb directly from Canon or a very reputable dealer? A little more info would be helpful in assessing the situation.
Additionally, do you know what was refurbished and/or how many approximate shutter clicks the camera had before requiring refurbishment?
I've owned many refurbished items before (incl. a camera) and have never had a problem with any of them.
A refurbished camera is inspected with a fine tooth comb, as opposed to a new one comin' off the line. Any problems you may have will probably fall within the 3 month warranty.
For a savings of $500+, I would go for it.
When I accidentally took my G10 for a swim (fell in the brook I was crossing) and sent it for repair Canon offered an opportunity to "trade up" to a refurbished G11. I took the offer and, aside from the packaging, I couldn't tell it from a new one. It came with everything a new one has (all manuals, software, cables, etc.). That's my only experience with refurbished equipment but I wouldn't be put off by another. If the 3 month warranty is the concern, look into a MAC extended warranty http://www.mackcam.com/.
I wouldn't have any problem buying a refurb from Canon, and having a factory overhaul makes this sound like a much better deal than buying a used model online from an unkown seller. It's a fair price, although I'm amazed that the used models are selling for such a premium.
However, one thing you might consider is the 5D2 kit with 24-105 IS zoom. The kit gets you the lens for a ~$300 discount off the separate body + lens price. If you can use that lens, then a new kit would be great deal vs. paying the currently high used prices.
