I took several images into PS5 to try out this month's theme and discovered the texturing menu grayed out! Then while looking at some other images I discovered it turned on. After some further exploration I discovered that texturing only seems to work on 8 bit images. Is that really true or am I missing something? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
There was a lot of discussion about this issue on the CS5 PS Forum recently. Bottom line: texturing - and a lot of other filters - only work in 8-bit. They'd be "too slow" in 16- or 32-bit. Which I take to mean that PS's ancient code base makes optimizing the filter functions an immense amount of work.
The work around for now is to do your texturing on a duplicate image in 8-bit mode, and then paste the result into a separate layer in your 16-bit image. Cumbersome...
Mark when I texture I use a separate image of a texture (cloth, concrete, plaster, fabric, wood etc.). I put that image on a layer above the original and use a blend mode usually multiply, screen, overlay or soft light. I always work in 16bit mode and have no problems. I never texture using filters. I hope this helps.

3 repliesI believe you have your answer. I have no idea why, but many things still only work in 8bit. Maybe someone else has a more technical answer...
