Sycamore Canyon is about 20 miles southwest from Flagstaff as the crow flies. With monsoon clouds and hope for a colorful sunset, I went to Sycamore Point which offers one of the better vantages.
This may be one of the better images from the evening with the sun still angled into the canyon and catching the left side ridge. Clouds and rain to the west prevented colors in the clouds and light into the canyon at sunset, so a future trip may be warranted.
Never heard of this place before, but it sure seems to have some potential for beautiful photography.
This is a fine scene with some outstanding monsoonal weather.
Very nice Doug. I've hiked up about 5 or 6 miles back in 2002. I remember lots of stream crossings if I'm thinking of the right place. I've never seen this perspective before. I like this a lot.
That's a nice viewpoint. When I lived in Sedona I did a few overnight backpacks in Sycamore Canyon, but going in from the side (sort of from West Sedona) or from the bottom (via Cottonwood and Tuzigoot NM). I think this gets a much better picture and a better feel for the scope. Sycamore is the second biggest canyon in AZ, behind only the Grand, but it doesn't get much attention. It's all dirt roads and hiking to get out there...
Just FYI, there should be some nice fall color in the bottom of the canyon. I never timed it right to get there, as I was always chasing aspens above Flag and then maples down by Sedona.
Speaking of things that I didn't get to in the area, have you ever driven the (dirt) Perkinsville road between Williams and Jerome? That seemed really interesting from the maps...

Mark and Lance, I have not hiked the bottom length. I have driven from the Perkinsville road east past Railroad draw and hiked a little ways north to Sycamore Basin/Cow Flat.
