All - does anyone know where it is safe and OK to car sleep in the Crested Butte area? I usually stay at a hotel but this time I am looking to save some money.

Thanks,

Tim

Theres more free car camping on Kebler Pass than one expects. Be careful, you may not leave Kebler Pass.

Yeah, what Kane said. There are all sorts of little turn offs from the Kebler Pass road. Also some spots down Ohio Pass road. I've even camped at the campground at Lake Irwin though it's not free. As to the safety, I can't comment but I've never had a problem.

Also, based on Jack Garret's post, I'm about 80% certain I may head over after work on Friday and come home Saturday night. Still not completely certain but it's looking better. Only downer is I have to be back in Denver early Sunday.

Paradise divide has several pullouts if you can get up there. There are open (and fee I think) campgrounds along slate creek road and Gothic road up towards Butler gulch. I have a favorite spot on Ohio Pass road right where it meets Kebler Pass road. There is probably some spots past Lake Irwin if you explore a little. Washington gulch has some spots before you get to the top. Lots of options.

Paradise Divide is not open...too much snow and not accessible. They said it may at least another 2 weeks. We stayed ar lake irwin campground...$16.00 per night...no electric and no showers.

Thanks Jack and everyone. I am planning on either Lake Irwin or Brush Creek road. I have heard that Brush Creek allows car camping but not sure if they still do.

Hey Tim. I'm heading that way after work tomorrow for an overnighter. Probably driving my 92 Toyota pickup though I might drive the silver Dodge Nitro. Stop and say hello if you see me.

Go to Lake Irwin but drive past the campground, plenty of free spots not on the lake that we found afterwords.

I ended up staying off of Brush creek road. It is about 6 miles from the highway and 1/4 mile from the y intersection. Go right and down about 1/4 mile you will see it on your right.
