American White Pelican, (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos), Ridgefield Wildlife Refuge, Ridgefield, Washington, USA
Canon 1D IV, 500mm + 1.4, 1/2000sec @ f/6.3, ISO 400
There is a flock of White Pelicans that have taken up residence at Ridgefield. They're a little skittish and generally pretty far back from the road, but I got lucky yesterday morning.
They develop a fibrous keel on the upper bill during breeding season; I guess that's now.
Very nice capture David, I love that looong wing spread.

Really nice! I love the comp with the bird having room to move into, and the full wing spread in the photo is great. Obviously I'm not a pelican as I fail to see the attractiveness of growing a fibrous keel.
Way to go on a beautiful shot. Gotta agree with John on the allure of the keel in the middle of your nose, but hey, it's all in the eye of the courting pelican!
