Neighbors and good friends Larry Hiday, Peter Bascetta, and I got away for a few hours to hike and photograph in the gorge last week. The tangled limbs of this Big-leaf Maple caught my eye. I'm thinking of tossing this into the Landscape Gallery, but it's a bit of departure from my normal fare and I thought I'd see what you all think first.

For sport, here's a photo Larry took of me setting up for this shot.

This is a departure from the grand vistas that we're used to seeing from you but I like it. The highlights are well handled and it isn't too busy which IMO is often the Achilles Heal of these types of images.
Great image, John. Yes, different than your "usual" masterpieces, but of equal caliber for composition. A great PNW intimate forest scene. I'd say, "Go for it!" with respect to a post in Landscape Gallery.
Being a sucker for a gorgeous tree myself I really like this! My only nit is it's a bit over sharpened. It has a bit of that crispy look of going a bit past perfect with the sharpening slider. Please know this is a small nit and I mention it out of my own past struggles with the "perfect web sharpening" circle of misery...!

8 repliesI love the composition John, great colors. I might have burned the background a hair, bit that is just a nit. Nice work
