Does anyone know of some really good locations for butterflies. Looking for some new places to photograph them. I live near Lewiston, Idaho and looking for spots in Washington and north Idaho. Have some spots around Lewiston and Clarkston, just seeeing if there is anywhere else we may be able to go.

Thanks for any info.

I wish I could help you there, but I'm definitely in the dark regarding butterfly hot spots. I do find their colors and patterns fascinating, so I'd love to see the results if you can track down some good places to photograph them.

Not that Seattle is close to you but we have two enclosed butterfly exhibits in Seattle. One at the Woodland Park Zoo and the other is at the Pacific Science Center.

Both are a joy to shoot in and I recommend arriving early in the day to either one.

Rick's suggestion is great if you want to travel that far. Although they are enclosed, nice out-in-Nature shots are the norm. I too wish I knew where to find butterflies. But I'm rather lazy when it comes to reading up on the flowers they like, habitat, etc. But that would be a key to finding them…
Good hunting, and please be sure to show off your finds here on the forum!

I'm not much help for specific locations in the wild, but Portland's Zoo has a butterfly exhibit and has times just for photographers (i.e. you won't trip toddlers with your tripod legs). Also, you might google for butterfly forums in the NW. I have a feeling you'll get more help finding them through a butterfly forum than a photog forum.
