Natural Ice Sculpting (reposted crop)
Another from Iceland. This day was a perfect B&W day, black sand beach and grey overcast skies. Huge pieces of ice would wash out of an inlet by a glacier and float out and wash ashore on this beach where the water would go to work forming these smaller ice chunks. I have a few I like from here taken over 2 days. Something about this one had me wanting to PP it first.

D3x, 16-35 @ 20mm, f11, ISO-50, CP.

Mmmmm...this one is sweet. Excellent B&W work, and really nice composition. The movement and the wave action bring a sense of motion to the solid ice in the foregrounds. Well done. :toast:

This one would look great really big. On the screen, it's hard to identify the ice as ice. Could be a tree root ball, etc. I love all of these things you have posted from Iceland, and I'm reluctant to offer suggestions 'cuz you're way beyond my skills, but nonetheless, I can imagine a little cropped off the right side. There isn't as much going on there, and the ice in the middle seems a bit stagnant. It's worth a look-see anyway, but you may have tried it already.

Here is a crop, I think I'm still partial to the original, but see what you think.

I like them both. Maybe the second a little more then the first. I see more detail in the wave on the right in the second, but that is probably just due to a little more exposure on the second one? :)

I processed it a little differently Cliff, I think it is do to a different method of sharpening I am trying.

I see the sharpening differences, the second one looks very good. As for the comp, I'll actually stick with the first one. I think the water coming in on both sides evenly adds to the scene...kinda hard to pull the ice off to one side or the other without losing some balance.

Interesting how we're divided on the crop. I much prefer the second, both the crop and the sharpening. Great shot for B&W.

Such a dramatic shot in BW! Well done!

As to which of the comps? Love the balance in the first one. The second one looks more action-packed to me-- more energy in the sea and around the ice. So interesting what a little crop and different sharpening can do... So my answer: I like both, #1 for calmly watching the ocean play with its toy; #2 for the forces of Nature at work. Hope that makes sense.

I like both equally (despite being the original suggester of a new crop). I think I like the second one better for the sharpness and for the slightly closer feel/larger size of the ice chunk. The loss of the right side doesn't do as much for me as I thought it would, but I can i.d. the ice better in the second one. Thanks for humoring me ;-).
