I'm having a friend (expert machinist) make a special aluminum plate I want to mount to my tripod. So my question is this:

I know the specification is 1/4x20, but is that for the threaded mounting screw or for the receiver socket?

If it's for the receiver socket, does anyone know how much larger the receiver socket is than 1/4x20?

Any help will be appreciated.

It is for both. 1/4 20 means that it is 1/4" in diameter and there are 20 threads per inch. Without both matching they will not screw together.

Since your friend is a machinist they should know the tap and die settings for the rest of it.... I used to have a CNC Milling machine. If you have any other questions let me know.
