Resizing for PhotoPortfolios

I hadn't added anything new to the portfolios in awhile but was trying to this morning. My problem is the in order to get below the 200kb limit I had to shrink the photo way to small. I tried cutting back the PPI but that didn't seem to help.

This is a link to the one I just posted:

http://www.photoportfolios.net/portfolio/pf.cgi?a=vp&pr=105645&pi=CARSONWILCOX&CGISESSID=0e1f0cf51186891084d667a06af3f4ae&u=30335

The original file was shot with a Canon 5D MK2 and is 5616 x 3744 pixels
and 20.54 MB.
My original jpg prior to resizing for NPN is 5616 x 3744 pixels and 7.97 MG.

So it's a full frame un-cropped image.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

I shoot the 5Dii as well & the original files are what I get as well from the originals.

If you do the following:

1) drop the resolution to 72 dpi,
2) size it down to a max of 720 pixels on one side.
3) sharpen it as appropriate
4) in PS "Save for web & devices..." & play with the percentage quality - usually a slider from 1-10 or 1-100. 80% quality usually gets me under the 300k needed. This converts the image to a jpg & reduces the quality slightly & removes all the exif data from the file to make it smaller.

Hope this helps.

Carson,

I'd like to add a couple of notes, here. First, Images must be no larger than 640 pixels overall on the longest side for Photo Portfolios.net, with a max file size of 200KB. DPI doesn't make any difference.

Be sure to convert the image profile to sRGB before going to Save for Web. In Save for Web dialog, click the arrow in the upper right corner. In the dropdown menu, select optimize to file size. Set this to 198KB to account for OS or FTP overhead. Ensure that 'Optimized' and 'Embed Color Profile' are checked. In the 'Metadata' dropdown, select none. These steps ensure that the file contains only image data without the EXIF metadata.

PPI has absolutely nothing to do with posting an image on a website. Pixel dimensions are all that matter. An image 720 x 540 pixels tagged with 72ppi will be exactly same in every way including the size at which it displays as an image that is 720 x 540 pixels at 300ppi. PPI only comes into play when you print, and it determines print size.

Thanks all, got it now.
Remaining problem is that now I can't log into PhotoPortfolios, does anyone know if there is a problem with the site?

I'm able to login if I go to my portfolio first, just not from the main page.

When you follow Wick Smith's directions in PS, make sure you record it and make an action. Then you can easily make the correct size images for your portfolio automatically next time and place them in folder. Makes it a no brainer.
