On a trip to northwestern South Dakota a couple of weeks ago, there were scads of immature birds around. This one has me confused, given all the dark coloring. Immature Chestnut-collared Longspur? Molting Longspur? Something else?

gosh, that's a tough one, Terry. primary projection looks too short for a longspur, unless they're still growing in. to me it looks a lot like a juvenile Savannah (or maybe Vesper?).
