Check out Lookout Lake and South Gap Lake in the Snowy Range for lots of Columbines. Another place would be the slopes above American Lakes in Colorado State Forest and maybe high in the Never Summer Range. I have not been up to American Lakes this year but they had record snow and the wild flowers will be running late this year.

I had some friends asking me about northern Colorado flowers. Anyone know anything about, say, the Flat Tops or Mt. Zirkel?

Jack, just got back from a few days at my cabin near Fairplay. We made a hike to Lake Emma from the Kite Lake trailhead and the flowers in the glade just below the lake were really nice on Friday August 12th. We saw many good species, including elephant Head, columbine, paintbrush and many more. Most were still at peak. The paintbrush we very impressive. I also spent some time in Mayflower Gulch and the flowers were pretty nice there. Shrine Pass looks like it is past peak, at least along the road. I hope to post a shot later tonight.

There are still lots in the Colorado Springs area (for those nearby or who don't have the time to travel), especially Cheyenne Canyon and the Rampart Range Road area. Specifically, I've seen lots of wild geraniums, purple aster and paintbrush. Seems like the recent rain has brought what was looking like a dead wildflower season down here back to life.
About 10 days ago, Shrine Pass was still pretty good, but don't know if that's still the case.

For northern Colorado---Lots of lupine and paintbrush and bunches of columbines like this yesterday just below Summit Lake on the western side of Buffalo Pass. Problem is the only access now is from the Walden side---the Steamboat side is closed for construction. There's still patches of snow in the trees near the summit (even saw some glacier lilies) so I expect the flowers to be good for another week at least, maybe two. As to the Flat Tops, I'd go to Stillwater Reservoir and go up the trail (#1119) toward the Devil's Causeway---I've heard reports and my experience tells me there is still abundant flowers in the first mile or so.
