I'm over in Hawaii at the moment and found this website that has local birders that are willing to show you around. I've contacted a couple and will let you all know how it went. Seems like a pretty good idea, and I'll probably sign up as a volunteer myself.

I don't know if the program still exists, but the American Birding Association used to have a printed directory of members who were willing to help visiting birders. My wife and I were listed. I've met some very cool people that way.
