Pierce the Sky
Took me nearly all freakin' summer to get one decent lightning photo, but I hope to have more opportunities before the snow starts falling. This is from about 90 minutes ago (Tuesday night). By the time I got to what I've perceived to be a dream location, the storm had moved east enough that the majority of the show was over. Most of what I saw was cloud-to-cloud lightning. Next time I hope to be there as the storm passes overhead, so that I'm ready when it moves only slightly east and I can shoot it in relative safety while it lays down some fire at closer range.

This is WAY cool Todd! When I 1st looked at it I thought you'd caught some strange illumination on the mountains.
Can you give us your techs on the shot?

Richard, thanks. This is 25 seconds @ f8, 100 iso.

One of the best cloud to cloud blasts I've seen, that it is totally horizontal with a pano crop makes it even better. With my luck my camera would have been in a vertical orientation at this point in time.

Yes, one of the best cloud to cloud shots I've seen!

This is super! I saw it as lightning right away but now that Richard mentioned mountains that's what I keep seeing. Would love to see a huge version!

Hey, i can sure relate to the frustration of lightning photos! One of these days i'm gonna get a shot of the lightning and the power plant together--similar to one you posted a few years back--but i still haven't found the right vantage point. This is pretty darn cool though--the horizontal bolt works well with the format here.

And the hits just keep coming! great image Todd it looks like a rip in the night sky to me, but you can definatly see the mountain range in neon.

Not only do you capture the best horizontal lightning image I've ever seen, but you get a cityscape to complement it!
Excellent capture, and I would truly love to see a large print of this one.

I like Richard's take on the mountain similarity. Otherwise, one of the coolest lightning shots I've seen!
