It looks somewhat robin-like with the red breast, but also appears to possibly be a juvenile (to my eyes at least)... and it doesn't look like a juvenile robin. The brown plumage isn't helping.
Thanks,
Max

Something about this creature...perhaps it's bill...seems to scream "I'm an Icterid".... But maybe, as my wife often claims, my hearing ain't so good as it used to was!

I will ask an Audubon friend of mine down here. it looks like a "finch" type of beak. perhaps the Purple Finch or something akin....maybe a female Varied Bunting?????
only problem I can't tell the size........is it finch size or larger........

weird bird--looks like an escaped cage bird to me, but I don't know what...
Thanks for chiming in, everyone. It's stumped a lot of people, but I think Peter may have nailed it (juvenile or female)! Ironically, I believe I just saw that species at the zoo today. St. Louis is a ways from South America...

Max, don't know if the moderator sent you a photo or not. being a newbee I don't know how to post a photo to a reply. anyway I contacted an Audubon friend who finally came up with a definative ans.
It appears to be a Scarlet-rumped tananger fom Panama/Columbia. this bird was recently split into Passerinni's Tanager and cherrie's Tanager but he wasn't bold enough to venture a guess as to which species it was in this photo.
He further suggested that if the bird was not in captivity that you could report it as a "rare" bird with Audubon at http://www.audubon.org/chapters?state=MO
good luck and sorry it took so long I was just a messenger in this. if you wish to email me, I can send you a photo taken by a friend of mine........I would have posted here but haven't worked that out yet. (-:
