Humpback Whale Fluke
We had a nearly perfect vacation, until we got a call on the second to last day of our trip notifying us that our home was burglarized. Yes, it sucks.

Anyway, I needed to zone out a little bit, so I thought I'd share this shot. It's more of a "I was there" shot vs. art, but it takes me right back to that time and place. Seeing the wales so close was awesome.

Sorry about the news about your home, that sucks. The shot is definitely a nice one though. I love the slight warm color being reflected on the water. Seeing whales up close is just an awesome experience. I would try cropping some of the water out from the bottom of this one, and maybe even a small slice from the left hand side.

Good luck with the house / insurance. I hope nothing irreplaceable was taken.

Ryan, you nailed it. Sharp/soft, dark/light, action/still... all of the contrasting components are there and it WORKS. Must have been great to see in person.

The home news is so frustrating, like Scott said, hope nothing irreplaceable was taken. The bad thing you went through might be a positive in one way for you and all of us: the next time somebody makes a statement about print prices being too high, let's remind folks of one thing: when there's a fire or burglary and you know that your family is secure, what's the FIRST item that people then worry about? 99% say pictures. Same when a hard drive crashes... does the avergae user lose sleep on how to reinstall Microsoft Excel? Nope, it's all about not losing pictures, because the value is priceless.

I do hope you lost nothing along that line (or family heirlooms), and let's hope that the person or persons who did it get appendicitis and need three root canals the day before the get audited by the IRS.

I too am sorry to here about your house Ryan. As the others said, hopefully nothing irreplaceable was taken.

Love the image, hopefully I'll get to see some whales closeup like that one day! And I think Scott's crop suggestion is a good one.

Major bummer Ryan! I remember how frustrated I was when my bike was stolen, so a major break-in must be so frustrating. I'm sorry you came home from such a great trip to that. Did they mess with the veterinary stuff at all?

As to the photo, it's great. I love flukes, and I think if you cropped it tighter to emphasize the lighthouse in the background it would be superb. The overall blue and hazy background works well to contrast the sharp whale.

John, the veterinary stuff was the primary target. In fact most of our personal stuff wasn't taken or damaged (a few incidental things they grabbed as they went about the house. It really sucks. Great vacation though.

Nice shot Ryan, I would love to get a shot like this. Sorry to hear about the break-in.

Great timing here Ryan. I like the subtle color palette. Sorry to hear about the break in at your home.
