This came to me this morning under the guise of being a nature photographer. I opened it thinking it was one of the photographers from this site. No I did not reply back or send any money.

I'm sorry I have to suddenly ask you for help , I made a trip to Scotland for a program, I'm presently in Edinburgh,Scotland and got mugged on my way back to the hotel, my bag was taking from me containing money and other valuable things, including my passport. I would like you to assist me with a loan of $1,500 to sort-out my hotel bills and get myself back home.

I have spoken to the embassy here but they are not responding to the matter effectively, I will appreciate whatever you can afford to assist me with. I'll the money back to you as soon as I return, let me know if you can be of any help. You can reach me via email or the hotel's desk phone, the numbers are

+447024034361 or +447024074344 .

I await your response,

Thanks,

Sandy

Yes, I emailed Sandy about that. I think her email was hijacked or something.

They may also just be pulling names from the site. Poor Sandy ! I have enough to buy you a coffee  !

Yup. This is a pretty standard hack/virus/scam. Basically it invades your address book and sends that message to everyone in it.

Sad to say, folks have been experiencing this for a number of years, to their great embarrassment and inconvenience. One was even our local legislator.

I received the same e-mail scam. I feel bad for Sandy.

I text messaged her as soon as I got it, because her email account is compromised I figured she might not even get the emails. Hope she can get it resolved fast

SO Sorry, everyone - yes, my computer has been hacked. I'm emailing this from a friend's - my computer is screwed, my entire inbox is gone (with 6 month's worth of job applications and ongoing communications) and worse.
I'm in the hospital with mother again (she has dementia and must have someone with her at all times) and I can't do a thing about this for at least several days.
I do NOT need this.... :frown:
What is wrong with some people that they get pleasure out of making someone else's life miserable????

I got Sandy's letter .. too. She'll just have to hike back home and sleep under the stars. Doesn't she know, that's how all photographers travel......?

I got the letter too--if you noticed, the reply to address is similar to Sandy's but it has a couple different letters. How devious.

Wishing you all the best, Sandy.

Looks like everyone in my address book, including everyone here I have communicated with privately, got this lovely
request.
My entire address book, all contacts for years, all emails, all sent emails, all files and folders stored on yahoo were erased.
I didn't know that all the careful back-ups on my computer do not back up emails since they are stored in Yahoo, not on the hard drives.
This place seems like a solution :
http://www.rackspace.com/apps/email_hosting/rackspace_email/
But I'll also ask here on NPN for secure email places.
I'm totally bummed and have no way to contact a lot of people (til they email me) but things could be worse.
Thanks to everyone for the support and good wishes.
Mother made it through another crisis and should be home in a few more days.
Sandy
