Colorado Fall Color

I'm considering a trip to Colorado for
autumn color in a week to ten days. My
planned destination is the San Juans,
although I'm not limiting myself to that
area.

I've heard some information that because of
hot weather, fall color in Colorado may not
be good this year.

What are your feelings (bad year, average,
good year), and when do you think that the
color will peak? I'm open to suggestions
regarding areas other than the San Juans.

Thank you.

Cordially,

Robert Dayton

I've never listened to predictions about color, good or bad. There are just too many variables. You've just got to show up and hope for the best. A week to 10 days might be early, however. The earliest I think I'd come is in 10 days, with plans to shoot as the colors approach peak towards the end of the month. There are a few notable exceptions to that time frame, but it's your best bet overall.

Robert, this may be worth looking at for locations and timing if you not seen it already.

Be sure and keep looking in the sticky thread at the top of the forum page for updates on fall colors, Robert.

Still totally green here in NW Colorado. My guess is that the colors are going to be somewhat later this year. Also, Buffalo Pass road has been closed by the Forest Service above Dry Lake Campground for construction---right at my favorite spot.
