Just wondering, I'm pretty sure I'm going to get to the E. Sierra this fall, but last year was such a hoot with the "riot" an all I wouldn't mind seeing some of your "mugs" again. It's mid September and I just returned from a good Whitney Shoot, and there's that crispness in the air already.

Thanks,

Paul

What date(s) are you looking at, everyone? I am not sure I can be there this year, but if it works out...

Very cool - sure would like to finally meet all the CA people!
If it's a date that works for me, I'll probably bring my little RV if any other woman (sorry, guys  ) wishes to share.

I plan to be drifting around the east side at some point this fall. If you post a date and I can make it, it would be good to see the gang.

Sorry I missed the gathering last year. Johnny Brown and I found a great spot with fine overcast (and drizzly) light and we could not tear ourselves away to make it to last year's riot. And I had a brand new tire iron I wanted to try out on someone's head. Damn!

Well I'm open, to whatever weekend and wherever as long as it's not farther North than Whoa Nellie. The two years I have gone have been pretty great photo adventures for me, my peers must bring good karma.

Paul

P.s. Thanks to Cory Freeman we have what may be more accurate information posted on the progress of fall color

I was thinking first, or preferrably the second weekend in october. Obviously the color reports will influence that decision. A friend of mine was hiking out past Convict lake and up into the Convict Creek area last weekend. He said there was no hint of color changing yet. It's only a couple/few weeks away. Does it really happen that fast? Anyway, I hope many of you can make the journey.

The only days I would possibly have are Saturday, Oct 8, or Saturday, Oct 15. I have to work the Sunday following each of those days, so I'd be time-limited to an early lunch get-together. If the weather looks, or is bad; all bets are off because I have to cross the range to get home.

We should nail down a date, time, and place by Wednesday, 9/28 so that folks can lock down their plans. Make sense?

Chris, I have seen the leaves change from green to yellow in less than 48 hours in Lee Vining Canyon, and I've also seen them stay green for many days. The upshot is that it's a cr^p shoot. The best thing to do is to stay as flexible as you are able.

I'm open to either of those days. A Saturday would actually be better for me. It would allow for Friday travel, Saturday fun, and Sunday travel. I'll go with the consensus though.

It looks like I'll be in the north end of the range (Mono Basin) on Saturday 10/8.

Preston,

That's close to the scene of the crime " Whoa Nellie." Let's see if anyone else will be up that way then. Color should be at peak or close by then. " See "Parchers" website for local fall report.

Due to the slow start/progression of color so far, I was think another week might be a better bet. Also, the weather for the first weekend seems like mostly clear sunny skies. Maybe there will be some more interesting weather the following week? So as it stands, I'm planning for the 7/8th. I will probably stay further south, west of Bishop, but will come up to the Whoa Nellie for a group gathering. I drive a 99' green Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Hi All,

For those of you who are planning to be on the East Side this comming week, let's plan to link up at Paul's 'scene of the crime'--the Whoa Nellie Deli on Saturday, October 8 at 11:30 AM.

The weather is looking pretty funky in the Tuesday, 10/4 thru Thursday, 10/6 time frame, but looks to improve on Friday, 10/7. So, assuming I can get over Sonora Pass on Tuesday, I will be there.

Safe travels, everyone!

Baring major issues, I should be able to make the journey. It does look like there will be a major storm in the high country over the next couple of days. Good Luck Preston. There may be a good covering of snow on those peaks in the background, of course if the leaves stay on the trees.

Hi All,

Given the expected bad weather and the fact that CalTrans will close Sonora Pass today, I am staying on my side of the range this time around.

For those of you who get to the East Side, have a great time, and stay safe!

Hi Preston,

Is Sonora Pass being closed for the season or is this just the result of the current bad weather? I sure would love to go by that way a few times before the end of the month.

Anil I believe this is only for the current storm, but if it really drops an insane amount then perhaps not. For more up to date road conditions check out Caltran's District 9 (Inyo, Mono, and northern portions of Kern Cos) facebook page and twitter feed here
