My granddaughter has been cast in her first play. I want to take pictures backstage of all the activity. Since I NEVER take people pictures, I need a recommendation on lens (Sony) to rent for that weekend. It will be low light and hectic.

Dottie, I don't know which specific Sony lens to tell you to get but I would think something in the range of a 24-70 mm f/2.8 zoom lens with Image Stabilization would be a good choice. Particularly if you are shooting with an APS-C sensor body. The zoom would be important for quick re-framing and the focal length range would provide ample working distance so you wouldn't have to be right in their face.
Have fun whatever you decide!

Like Wayne, I have little knowledge of the Sony lineup plus I usually just photograph rocks and trees........... I think there is a 135mm f/1.8 Zeiss branded lens that might be of interest. 70-200 2.8 zoom might also be a good choice.
Hope that helps.
Edit that. If you are backstage I think the 24-70 might be the best bet too. From the audience the longer lengths might be better.

Thanks guys!. I appreciate your responses. I will only be backstage (not in audience) so that 24-70 looks good. A friend also emailed be about a 16-35mm f2.8 Zeiss. I may rent more than one. There are four performances so I will have time to play around with each!
