Yosemite's Sky Islands!

Yosemite Park Service Video

The video is a fine example of the high plateaus in the Sierra Nevada. It's also a great source to identify what wildflowers we are shooting way up in the high country!!

If you haven't experienced one of the high plateaus, you can find them with a topo map or by using Google Earth to place your viewpoint on top of some of the highest peaks to look down on the plateaus. Look for easy access places such as the Saddlebag Lake area and near the west entrance of Yosemite.

Steve, I think you meant east here.

There is a very nice area for the high altitude flowers off of the Saddlebag Lake road. Park at the Sawmill Walk-in CG. From the CG, head southwest, cross the creek and meadow to the boulder fields above. Climb up to the top of the ridge and you'll find a nice 'sky island'.

In the same area is the Hall Natural Natural Area and the Carnegie Institute field station. Camping is not allowed in the natural area. There are nice viewes of Mount Conness and the surrounding peaks.

That was nice little video. Thanks for sharing.
