Risk & Gain (with Kane)
If your title doesn't rhyme--it's a crime!

As i just mentioned to Koveh, Kane and I were planning on sunrise from Chasm yesterday, but the impending storm changed our ambitions and we targeted Lake Helene. I told Kane there was a 1 in 3 shot of light for sunrise. When the rain started 2 miles up the trail, I changed my odds to 1 in a million :frown: The lake was totally socked in. I figured we'd at least have a prayer looking east, so we bushwacked up a ridge above the lake. Kane was moving a bit faster, and i was worried i wouldn't get to the top in time for sunrise, so i hung back at an overlook a bit lower. It was still looking hopeless, only a faint glow in the horizon; but as it started to sleet, a break opened right on the horizon and the valleys were flooded with amazing warm light! Sleet and snow were hitting me as i took this shot. The direct light was blocked by the ridge on the rhs here--but Kane made it in time for the glow (he'll post his amazing result soon enough! ) At first I was bummed that I didnt get to Kane's vantage--but in retrospect it's a good thing cause we came away with very different perspectives.

I like the linked images! The last shot there is really nice. What mountain is that in the background?

All good, but that last one is to die for!

Hell of a productive couple of days! Jeez!

You really nailed it on this trip, Stan! That last one is the pick of the litter, but they are all superb!

Outstanding work. It must be great packing around with your own personal weatherman. I really like the entire set.

#4 and the last three are just gorgeous! Thanks for sharing Stan!

Beautiful shot, Stan. I've found it's better for me if I aim for a destination and then figure out how to make the best of whatever weather that's there when I am.

That's an interesting statement, Howard...as a forecaster i tend to plan my trips around the weather, but i think it causes me to miss out on some ops like this (if Kane hadn't have suggested the trip, i probably would have not risked hiking in the rain). I guess i need to strike more of a balance!

Great stuff Stan. #5 is my favorite. Guess it's all taste, but not a big fan of the Miracle shots.

As you stated, what a weekend!! Every single one of these is beautiful in one fashion or another.

Man, Stan, I'm a fan! You get great stuff whether or not the weather cooperates.

Stan, what an honor to hike with you. Your shots are stunning and quite frankly, you came away with a lot more than I did. I think we were lucky that morning, you, me, and Koveh. It's really interesting seeing the different comps available through different eyes. I love the V comp in the above image. Of course the processing is right on an just love that color. Very dramatic.

This is a nice series of images, Stan. My favorites are the first image of the Rock Cut and the first tundra image. I really love the subtle light in both of those images. I was with Koveh and another photographer friend that same morning up at Two Rivers. The light was incredible to witness from our vantage point, as well.

You had some special sunrise light. If I had to choose just one to keep, it would be the last in your series.
