It would add interest and be in keeping with the "critique" part of our experience here, if the editors would provide a sentence or two describing the point or points that was most compelling for the selection of the winning image. Wouldn't we all gain from knowing what it was about the selections that made them stand out over other entries?

Charlie, I agree that information would be very helpful in the learning process. Sometimes it is so obvious why a photo was chosen, but other times I am at a total loss for the reasoning and I would learn from knowing why that photo was chosen above all the other wonderful images for that week. Although it would mean more time for the moderators who choose the images, just a sentence or two as Charlie suggests would hopefully not be too burdensome.

Bill and Pat, the (excellent) Flora Mods often do this, and I find it extremely valuable, to see images through their expert eyes.
The wildlife guys - Brad, Vincent, and Lon - have also occasionally done this, and some of the other Mods as well.
I agree it would be a tremendous learning experience for all of us, and would like to see much more of this, in ALL galleries.
