A friend just sent me a link to test my ability to distinguish between different hues of colour. I did the test fairly quick (excuses, excuses!), nevertheless I was pretty surprised I didn't score higher.
The result was 21 for my gender and age-group; 0 being the best, 1520 being the worst, though they diplomatically don't use the term "worst" ;^)
The intro to the test reads:
"FACT: 1 out of 255 women and 1 out of 12 men have some form of color vision deficiency.
Take the online color challenge, based on the official FM100 Hue Test by X-Rite."
If you happen to be interested in taking this simple (!) test yourself, here's the link:
31 for me. I honesty could not differentiate some of the subtle changes.
Very interesting!
Sandy
Mis-typed...meant 21 - still not so great compared to all of you eagle eyes!

I got 0, though I'm more impressed with the fact that I took a test like this at 5:30 in the morning.

That was fun, and informative. I scored 19, and was pretty flabbergasted that I did that well for these 60 year old eyes. Now, I will need to sit around for a few minutes while my eyes uncross! I may have to try this again at home tonight on a calibrated monitor to see if that makes any difference.
I scored 3. I'll have to study up so I can do better next time.

I scored 15 with fresh eyes. I think I'll try this test again at the end of the day to see how I score with tired eyes.

Damn, I got 4. I thought I had it nailed.
I've seen and taken this test before, but can't remember my results the first go 'round.
Interesting exercise, thanks for posting.

2nd times a charm. Perfect! 0

I got a 3 which I'm pleased with on this awful work monitor. Two co-workers got a 16 and a 17 respectively, though their ages are nearly double mine for what it's worth.

My score = 8
Worse in blue/green areas.
Age=66. Best in age = 0.
No wonder my photos don't draw much attention.... !!!!

Wife got 8.
1 employee got 26.

Scored 3. I guess that's good enough. At least for B&W photography.
And for what it's worth, I wonder how people achieve scores above 1000 - as I scored 910 by submitting the initial order without making any changes...

Great test, I should have waited to do it in a dark room but I am not very patient as it is I scored a 4 . Fun challenge! My excuse for not getting a perfect score is having a headache behind the right eye !!! Will try again when the advil kicks in!
O.K. I re-did the test and I'm perfect ,I'm prefect , I'm perfect !!!! Man I have got to get a life!!!!

I was very surprised that I scored a 0, I'm 42 years old. Thanks Ashley for a bit of a diversion.

Thanks for posting your results Sandy, Max, Bill, Kerry, Mark, Lon, Luke, Larry, Basil, Lorna, and Nate :^)
I've thinking about getting into B & W for a while now, perhaps this is the nudge I needed to take the plunge ;^)

Ashley, it would be cool to see a similar test that was all gray scale.

I got a surprising 4, with those 4 all next to each other in the bottom row. I guess my eyes are better at age 40 than I thought :).

I got a 4 too, and like Rob all next to each other in the bottom row. Not sure if there really is an issue there or if my type A hurry up and get it over self kicked in....

I've taken this a bunch of times over the years, and never gotten much better than a 40. But I am slightly red-green color blind, so I guess that's OK.
And for what it's worth, I wonder how people achieve scores above 1000 - as I scored 910 by submitting the initial order without making any changes...
It comes up slightly differently when you reload, Basil. Without touching anything you will get between 800-1100 as far as I can tell.
I have done this a few times. as well. I my average is about 45. like David, my color acuity is weak in the lighter hues of cyan/magenta-red/green; a fact I've known about for some time.
Harley always points out that my images have too much cyan, or they are too cool, or both. I am glad he does!

David - yes, of course there's some variability in the score of the unmodified puzzle. I'm just saying that those scores of 1520 mentioned in some posts and is also given as a reference on that website probably don't reflect any serious attempt at solving the puzzle. Which is in some way a pity, as it would be interesting to see real figures as to what the distribution of the performance is throughout the population (or well, the people taking the test).

this is has been posted several times in the RMNP forum. I think the first time i took it i got a couple wrong--but i got a 0 the second time around.

Got 15 with 49-year-old eyes on a 6-year-old Dell 2405 monitor, but I thought I'd have done better, the hues weren't hard to differentiate, or so I thought. This means only one thing:
"Honey, I need a new monitor!"

I scored a 0 with 49 year old eyes on a Macbook Pro laptop.
I scored a 4, which I am very happy with. I thought it was tedious at first, but then it got fun. The blues and the darkest shades were the hardest for me.

And I'd be interested to know how many of you end up scoring 0, which in their grades is equal to perfect!
Very interesting!
