Just got back from three days on the road--i shortened my trip to save gas $ since im gonna need it for the kamikaze sleep-deprived day trips that im going to have to make on work days next week if i want to get any good wide color shots this season. Ive seen more color the first week in September than i did on this trip--leaves are changing fast though, so it should only take another week for peak most spots. The only real good color was east side of Independence (which is always early)--if i had known that ahead of time i might have stayed there the whole time. At least the Kebler ferns were at peak!

2) Monarch Pass (which was also nearing peak)

3) Without the aspen, had to concentrate on other things, like grass...

4) ...and ferns!

5) As i said, the Elks were very green 1-2 weeks from good color, here's Capitol (my first time there actually--but i will be back, awesome spot, even if i had to walk the last couple of miles since i dont have 4WD...

6) The very green Mcclure Pass

7) River fog in the valley. I've always liked going early for fall color (like a little green) but this season is changing my mind--its October or bust from now on! One more fern shot at ESS...

Very nice collection Stan! The first image and the two intimates really stand out for me, though I would be proud of any of 'em.
Good luck next week with the sleep deprivation.

thanks, Jeff--ill need it!
Jack--its easy, just drive to Snowmass, turn down Capitol Creek road and drive ~7 miles until your car has had enough! I actually didnt bother going to the classic overlook up at Hells Roaring (a mile fruther from the Capitol trailhead), i went up the ditch trail for this shot and some others i havent processed yet...
Looks like a very fruitful trip. And it sounds like you've got more plans coming up. That opening shot is stunning. The sunburst works well.

You are just getting paid back for the amazing early series you sprung on us last year!
Although I really don't know what you are complaining about! These are all outstanding with 4,5, and 6 blowing my socks off!

Fine work! I especially like your fern/aspen images here and in the 'Landscape' gallery (what's 'ESS'? ).

These are all beautiful, Stan. I think I like the Landscape gallery post the best but these are all beautiful.
Question (for Stan or anyone): I will be heading to Kebler / Ohio passes for the first time later this week and I have been wanting to shoot some locations with ferns based on photos that I have seen from NPN photographers. Is there any specific area around Kebler Pass where they are prominent (ie: Lost Lake Slough, or Horse Ranch Park) or are they pretty much all over? Feel free to e-mail me offline if you don't want to be more specific in this forum.
Thank you in advance for your help!!

Number Five.

The view in 5 looks like it will be great when the aspens turn. The peaks' shadows look a little funky- did you use a gnd?

Should have mentioned that I find #'s 4 & 7 to be tres excellent!

#1 is, well #1, what gorgeous light on those golden ferns!
Great collection Stan - I was there this weekend 09/24 - 09/26. Colors are changing pretty fast. The river fog was pretty cool - I also took a few shots of the same location while coming back to Carbondale from Mc Clure pass

What's wrong with ferns? even though the color is slow, I really do like the fern colors Stan.
