Is the road from Marble to Crystal Mill accessable by a Nissan Xtera 2wd if the road is dry?

I don't think it would be a problem in an Xterra 2wd, but it somewhat depends on your experience driving jeep roads. I test drove the Xterra 4wd and wouldn't have a problem taking that over the road in 2wd. My biggest concern would be popping a tire, since the stock tires on a 2wd probably aren't made for rocky roads. Also, this time of year, the road can be crowded with a lot of inexperienced drivers, which can make things more difficult in the narrow spots.

I've never put my Xterra in 4WD on that road - shouldn't be a problem as long as its dry. Have a safe trip and enjoy! :wavey:

Just take it slow and watch closely for any "tire poppers".

Jack Garrett and I drove it just this morning. He drives a Jeep and no problems there. However, he did use 4wd low on a few of the steeper descents to control speed. Having 4wd imo is more than a luxery for that road. Every vehicle we saw at the mill was either an atv or a 4wd vehicle. I think it depends on your off road driving experience.

Thanks all for your help. After reading Kane's report of lackluster color at Crystal Mill this year I was somewhat disappointed.

I would not attempt it in a 2WD Xterra. You might have enough ground clearance, but there are at least 2 steep sections that you may not get enough traction to get up on your way back out, unless you have off road tires on it and extra weight in the backend. Also, I don't believe it is safe to go down those steep sections unless you are in a lower gear such as 4WD LO....depending on your brakes to slow you instead of the gearing is not my idea of a fun time. I was in there with Jack and Kane in my 4WD 4Runner and used 4WD LO for all the descents. My method is to crawl slowly up or down to keep any bouncing from damaging the underside.
