CNN has posted a story about a Pennsylvania couple who were attacked by a bear (presumably the black variety) ... WHILE SITTING IN THEIR LIVING ROOM!

No information on whether they were watching Animal Planet at the time or what they were snacking on that might've provoked this outrage.

If you ever needed a reason for keeping a loaded .44 Magnum on the side table while watching TV, this is it.

Several years ago I read an article about a woman somewhere near Breckenridge who was sitting in her kitchen eating breakfast when a mountain lion strolled into the living room through an open door and made off with one of her bunny slippers. The article didn't say what she was eating but I'm inclined to believe it included mushrooms.

Well, Bret, that lady may have had mushrooms on her cereal, but CNN showed a film clip of the couple returning from the hospital. He had his head and one arm thoroughly bandaged, and she had a few scrapes of her own.

What I found interesting was that this story kind of confirms something I was told by someone while I was in the Canadian Rockies. That fellow said that up there black bears aren't really dangerous as long as you give them some room. That's because they aren't at the top of the food chain; the grizzlies are and will attack and eat a black bear. In the Appalachians back East, the black bears ARE at the top of the food chain and are a lot less likely to be intimidated.

I have spent a lot of time in woods back here in the East (Smokies, Shenandoah, Blue Ridge) and seen a lot of black bears. I can't say I have seen any significant difference in their behavior toward humans from their black bear counterparts in the West. I did see a bear on the porch of the next door cabin one summer in Glacier! Must not have had the right cereal!!
