it seems like there are a few successful art show photographers here on npn who ive been able to learn from over the last couple of years. so id like to throw this out there to those more experienced at this.

i started doing art shows maybe 3 years ago, just a couple a year. i didnt do my first juried show until last year. what a difference it was sales wise. from what i can gather from my experience, its seems like the juried shows are where its at.

so where i stand for 2006. i am finally putting together an extensive schdule for this year which will include all juried shows, and mostly limited to hanging wall art (no crafts). i have large portfolios in 2 regions, the adirondack mountains in ny, and long island, ny. i am planning on doing 10 shows in those regions in 2006. i have been succesfully accepted to 5 out of 5 shows thus far, and have around 4 or 5 more applications and submissions out there already.

so where im going with this. well, i have a smaller portfolio of sellable work from the coast of maine. in doing reseach, ive found a bunch of juried shows that i think are the kind of shows that can be sucessful. but i wont have much time beforehand to shoot and widen my portfolio.

would you suggest i go into this slowly, and just work my 2 regions this year. or throw caution to the wind and get myself up to maine to work shows too. it appears that i will have the time to take on some extra shows, and it will be a good way to get into the region to do some limited shooting.

from your experiences, what would you have done, or suggest someone in my shoes to do? possibly overextend myself and go into a 3rd market? or sit back, work my 2 markets this year, and see how successful the year was before deciding to tackle a new market?

thanks for the time.....larry

no guts, no glory... those who are successful are risk takers, those who are cautious buy insurance....

Larry,

I think if you have the time to make it up to maine, I would concentrate and photographing the region and then attacke that 3rd market next year with a marketable protfolio next year. In the meantime go up there and visit those shows and see what others are selling there. Do a little research, shoot those images that seem popular and come to market with something that will move. if you already got into 5 juried shows, it will be likely that you will get into the others. 10 shows is quite a bit of work and keeping your stock full from show to show will be taxing to say the least. Risk is good, without you'll never expand, but an un-calculated risk is just foolhardy. Anyway that is what I would do.
