My wife and I visited the upper trailhead of the McKenzie River trail on 10/2/11. This image shows the state of the color for the drier lava flows. There was very little color away from the lava flows except the sunnier roadsides.

Just gorgeous and a unique setting with the lava. The vine maple looks so good. The textures in the image are rich and interesting. Glad you posted. Makes me want to hurry and get out there!

Catherine,
Yes, it is a bit out of the ordinary setting to photograph vine maple! I really enjoyed capturing all of the repeating configurations of shapes and textures. Thanks!
Very nice combination of elements Phil. Hopefully I'll catch some color around Mt. Hood on Monday!

Nice fall colors Phil. I can't wait for things to get going down at the lower elevations.

Joe, did you find much color around Mr. Hood today?
Scott,
Most of the color I have found is around 2,000 feet and higher. And a lot of the lower color is along roads and in dry soils such as you find in lava beds. A bit late just like most of the year.
