CS5 on my Windows machine is much slower than CS4 (even after applying the supposed "performance improvement" updates up through 12.0.4). I'd love to stick with CS4, but then I'm at a mismatch on camera raw with LR3 (making it more difficult to export out to PS5 and maintain the newer corrections in ACR). Anyone else experiencing similar issues? Should I just live with the mismatch in exchange for actually getting work done in a timely matter w/o crashes (on CS4 instead)?

I found CS5 to be far more responsive than CS4 on a Windows machine. Are you using a separate scratch disk? How much RAM do you have?
Have you followed the steps outlined here in optimizing PS? (scroll down to 'Set Performance Preferences').

Yep, all those recommendations were implemented the day I installed....and I'm on a 64-bit, dual core i5 processor with 8gb RAM.

Hmmmm...under what circumstances is your computer crashing when using CS5? When using certain filters or third party plug-ins? Panoramic images? Multiple high res. files open?

You may want to install more ram. 8Gb is the bare minimum especially if you're on Win7. I use 24Gb of RAM and Win7 Pro and CS5 literally screams through everything, no scratch disk needed with that much RAM, which is another huge benefit. I had CS3 with a scratch disk on my old WinXP machine with 4GB of RAM and it was glacially slow. If you do add RAM and are running Win7 you need to have the Pro version of Win7 to address 16GB of RAM and above. Most experts (I'm not) recommend a minimum of 12GB with Win7 and CS5.
Another benefit I've noticed with 24GB of RAM is that Bridge no longer crashes or even stalls out like it did on my old machine under CS3 and 4GB of RAM.

Might be time for me to start using a desktop again since my laptop is limited to 8GB of RAM.

I have 8GB on my laptop and CS5 works just fine for me. On my 21 megapixel files, it's very fast with all the standard adjustment layers, even if I have a lot of other programs open and no separate scratch disk. I've worked with files up to 800 megapixels on it and while it definitely gets slow at those huge sizes, it still always works w/o crashing. So I don't think that too little RAM would be the issue in this instance. It doesn't seem like it would be caused by a virus or some other issue with your comp if CS4 works fine. Maybe call Adobe support, though I think they're often useless.
